The evoheatshields, 0.250"-thick insulating phenolic spacers, thermally separate the intake manifold from the cylinder head. The very low thermal conductivity phenolic material in the evoheatshields dramatically reduces the transfer of heat from the cylinder head to the intake manifold. The resulting temperature drop inside the intake manifold translates into additional available power, a much sharper engine response and even some gains in mileage. The evoheatshield is the perfect performance bolt-on improvement for a stock engine along with a low restriction air filter, or the final touch to a highly modified one.

Performance engines like cool, dense air because it increases volumetric efficiency by occupying less space. So packing more fresh air into the existing induction system and cylinder volumes becomes possible. This extra-metered air is then mixed with more fuel to increase power (as compared to the same engine breathing hotter air). In addition, cool air also reduces the tendency of engines to knock allowing the ignition timing to stay more advanced; and on turbo-, or supercharged engines, allowing the boost to be kept higher for even more power.

Popular "cold air" intake systems attempt to reach unrestricted and theoretically cooler air from outside the standard air box. However, they do not deal in anyway with the source of power-robbing heat under the hood. The hot cylinder head transfers heat by natural conduction to the intake manifold. And like an oven, the intake manifold heats up the "cool" incoming air passing through. In addition, the air temperature sensor which is attached to it, sends readings to the computer to compensate for very hot air. Air can reach 180+ degrees Fahrenheit. In forced induction engines, intake air gets even hotter after going through the compression process in the charger, even if the engine is equipped with a large intercooler.
